54 Suicidal Schoolgirls Can't Be Wrong!

My Friday ended a helluva lot better than it started, considering I got my copy of "Suicide Circle" in the mail (thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] xelucha!).

What can I say? This film has everything - fabulous death scenes (the schoolgirls jumping in front of a train was just the beginning!), 12-year-old j-pop chicks, even a cute Rocky Horror reject breaking spontaneously into song! Not to mention that scene with the daikon radish (I'm gonna be extra careful the next time I make a salad!).

Am I the only one that finds watching many of these Japanese films a little like the David Lynch experience? They make your senses scream, give you enough plot & visuals so that you can formulate your own theories as to the meaning of the story, but never quite give you everything, always leaving you wanting just that little bit more.

Art like that is a beautiful thing.

It's really cool! Here are some review links:

Internet Movie Database listing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/)
Midnight Eye review (http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/suicclub.shtml)
Snowblood Apple review (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/index2.htm#S) (I know I posted this one before, but it's got lots of links at the end of the review)

Apparently, the movie's based on a manga, & I think you can download chapters here (http://www.omanga.net/?cid=jisatsucircle manga).

oops!

I goofed a couple of those links - the Snowblood Apple & Omanga links are to the main pages. You have to scroll down the Snowblood one to "Suicide Circle"; the Omanga titles are on the left side - it's listed as "Jisatsu Circle". Oh, and the film's tagline, as quoted on the IMDB (in case you didn't know), means "see you, everyone; good-bye". That page has a photo gallery, too.

Definitely do, & let me know what you think. BTW, I absolutely love your "Eraserhead" icon!

i watched it tonight too! i had some of the very same thoughts -- including thinking the crazy scene with the glam-rock-punk guy was ~very~ RHPS inspired! and i am so clumsy that i will think twice before slicing up any daikon in the near future. yikes!!

i love films that i just kind of experience and take them all in and figure it out later. i like the kind of movies that make other people say, "I don't get it, that didn't make any sense!!" but the experience of watching them is unforgettable, and you can draw your own conclusions.

the coils of flesh, now, that is a new image for the horror movie archives. i saw a roll of elastic tape coiled on the table afterwards and had to put it away because it freaked me out. :)

I'm glad you & I are on the same page about that movie. And be careful of those daikons. ^_^

I agree, I think that's what great films are: experiences. They don't have to make sense at first. And if you discuss a film with others, you can get totally different perspectives on it, maybe see it in ways you hadn't thought of.

You said it! I doubt we'll be seeing coils of flesh in American horror movies, although who can say if the next big thing in horror directors isn't watching these flicks right now just waiting to pay homage? I didn't even think to equate it with elastic tape! Boy, that's creepy. :P
